It is the story of Akakiy Akakievich, someone like so many others that spends his hours unsuccessfully plodding away in a job to which he’s resigned. He’s a lonely, simple man with no ambition who simply occupies his small space in a silent and ordered manner. But he is also a good and in that way rare man. One day something magical takes place, though something that appears at first to be a bad omen. He realizes that his old tattered overcoat cannot survive any extra wearing in the middle of a frozen Saint Petersburg winter. The loss, however, awakens him from his lethargy and submission, as he applies himself to the task of finding a new coat, something he can hardly afford. |
