Walter Gropius saw stage work, much as he did architecture, as the interaction of different discipli¬nes in "orchestrated unity". From the structural affinity between the two arts, he extrapolated the need to set up a Bauhaus stage. Here, the con¬stitutive elements of "stage design" were to be investigated and redefined. The Bauhaus stage revolved around Oskar Schlemmer, who was head of the stage workshop from 1923 to 1929. With his Tri ad i c B a II et and Bauhaus dances, he explored the field of tension of "man in space" and hence the fundamentals of theatrical design in abstract and geometrical flxperiments with form, colour, sound, movement and light.
